The Great Basin Observatory is the first observatory ever built in a U.S. National Park. It is a project of the Great Basin National Park Foundation in collaboration with 4 partner universities and Great Basin National Park. It was constructed in 2016 to enable scientific discovery and educational opportunities to build public awareness of, preserve, encourage stewardship of, and appreciate the natural dark skies over Great Basin National Park and the Great Basin geographical region as a whole.
